Hello everyone! In today’s post, we are going to discuss knives and just what you need to have in your preps. While there are hundreds of different types on the market, only a few are well suited for Preppers. Well, at least that’s my opinion anyway. Sit back, grab a cup of coffee and let’s get started.
I guess I need to explain what I mean by “only a few are suited for Preppers”. As Preppers, we have a rather unique view of things and we tend to see knives through the lens of survival. Things like cheap pocket knives, really have little use in the overall scheme of things, where I am concerned. I figure every knife that I buy that I intend to use after SHTF needs to be something that will last a long time. Now that is not to say that there is no place for the less expensive ones in my preps. Quite the contrary… They will be great bartering items, even if they are inexpensive and you may find times when you will need to do something that would destroy even the best of knives in the process. It both of these situations, a good cheap knife will be just the thing for the job.
So, what kind of knives should we have for our own use after SHTF hits? You we need to consider the answer that question is just what kind of things are we going to be using them for. While a good pocket knife is great for cutting string and various other daily items, it would not be very effective and skinning a large deer. I would recommend that you keep several of these in your preps because once they are gone; you will no longer be able to get them. You may also want a few that you could pass on to your children when they become of age. You also need to consider, that you might lose one or two while working over water or other place where they would be lost if dropped. A good pocket knife will be worth its weight in gold when SHTF hits, so be sure to have plenty in your preps!
The next type of knife that you will want to have in your preps, are hunting knives of good quality. When it comes to field dressing animals or cleaning fish, you just can’t beat a good hunting knife. A good hunting knife will help you create kindling when in the forest. They have a number of uses and their strength is of key importance. For example, if you need to use it for batoning wood for a camp fire after a rain. A cheap knife simply will not hold up for this kind of work, so care should be exercised when selecting the Hunting knives that you want to add to your preps. Just remember that you will have to live with whatever knife you choose to go with. This is an important choice, so make it wisely!
Next we have butchering knives. They will also need to be of high quality and hold an edge as long as possible. You won’t want to have to keep stopping to sharpen your knife every few minutes when butchering an animal. That could quickly become a pain in the behind, so be sure to get a good set as there are several different styles of them that you will need when the time comes. Also, don’t forget to store up several good knife sharpeners for keeping them sharp at all times. Take the time to do your homework and learn everything you can about them before making your final decision. These will be key to your survival.
Other knives you will want to have are fighting knives and machetes. Even if you have no idea how to fight with a knife, you may find yourself forced to do it so be sure to have a good one and keep it with you at all times. You will want something that has a little length on it as well as a good handle for gripping it when the time comes. Just remember that a cheap knife will get you killed faster than no knife at all. Again, this is one of those items that you will want to put a lot of thought into and choose wisely when buying one.
The machete is more of a tool than a knife in my book. While it is designed to be used primarily for cutting plants and such, it is also often used as a weapon as well. There are many styles of machetes on the market so look for quality above fancy design. I have actually bought several of these from Harbor Freight and added them to my preps solely for using as barter items. Anyone that doesn’t have one will be wanting one and that you can be sure of. They will be essential for long term survival and while that can be purchased for hardly nothing today, they will worth their weight in gold after SHTF hits. Well, I guess that is it for today and I hope you have enjoyed today’s post. Until next time, stay safe, stay strong and stay prepared!

Paragraph 6.. a cheap knife will get you killed faster than no knife at all.. I disagree.. I would prefer a cheap knife to no knife anytime. From experience I have found that even a cheap knife will cut or leave a nice wound much better than no knife. I have used cheap knives to make spears.. open cans
. And stab a person who needed ventilating. Cheap knifes are sharpened easily because of the soft steel.. they don’t stay sharp however.. Even in prison you can see how a cheap shank is better than no shank.. great website American prepper I look forward to all I read from you!!
Giving examples of brand names of various types & style knives would be beneficial.
I normally do, but this one just got by me. I will work to make sure that in the future they will have them. 🙂
